Aotea

A world of its own, where people and place are woven in a tapestry of ecological richness.

We live in a beautiful and remote island environment that unifies our resilient and diverse community. We value our natural heritage, acknowledge our history and wish to preserve our way of life, looking forward to a sustainable future so our environment and community prosper.

Aotea / Great Barrier Island is one of Aotearoa’s last truly wild places — home to unique ecosystems and species found nowhere else.

Located 100 km northeast of Auckland, its isolation makes it special, but also vulnerable. Introduced pests, invasive weeds, and human activity all pose risks to native biodiversity. Protecting Aotea’s environment requires local knowledge, long-term care, and strong community collaboration.
